... LYLA WALKS AWAY WITH A FEW SCRATCHES!

Sam briefly panics when he gets the call to pick up Lyla from the scene of the accident, but Lyla assures him that everything is ok. On their way home, Lyla shares what she learned from the M.E.I.P.S book, “You know, some of the babybots have extra air filters that filter out any bad air particles! It’s way better for the baby than natural pregnancy in so many ways!” “Yeah! Babybots are great if you want GMO babies!” Sam retorts, irritated. “I’m not going to change my mind on this, Sam! So if you want kids, you’re better off just accepting that we’ll be using the babybot!” Tense silence fills the car, and neither of them speaks for the rest of the ride.

That weekend, Lyla and a reluctant Sam pick out the most expensive babybot from Rent-A-Babybot and use Embryo Emporium’s website to have one of their three embryo capsules shipped to their house. After some discussion on where to put the babybot, they decide that their bedroom is the most logical spot. Since they’re planning to insert their embryo capsule the next weekend, they’ve invited their parents and several friends from Seattle to come out to celebrate this exciting moment.

“Is that a v7 or v8?” asks one of Sam’s friends at the party, referring to the babybot version. “A v8,” responds Sam, “the rental costs a pretty penny, but I wasn’t about to get an older version and risk something going wrong.” “Good call!” one of Lyla’s friends pipes up, “By the way, weren’t your parents supposed to come?” Sam blushes, slightly embarrassed, and answers “Yeah, but they refuse to acknowledge that we’re going ahead with using the babybot. They see it as an attempt to play God.” “Weird,” Lyla’s friend responds, “Everybody in Seattle uses them since recent babybot studies have shown that botbabies have a much higher IQ and are also much healthier than natural babies.” Lyla shoots Sam an “I told you so!” look, which he ignores. Lyla’s friend continues, “Also, that seems like a typical religious person mindset. Apparently, they’ll hate on anything that improves the lives of women. We’ve known for years now that the biggest cause for the gender wage gap is caused by women having to leave the work force to take care of children.” The room fell into an awkward silence, and both Lyla and Sam contemplated whether these kinds of conversations would dominate the next nine months of their lives.
